Matthew Hopkinson talks about the reasons some towns in Greater Manchester could be at risk of losing their M&S store on BBC Radio Manchester

18 November 2016 by Sarah Phillips

Following the announcement that M&S are due to close 30 of their larger stores selling fashion and homeware products to focus on their food offering, Matthew Hopkinson released a blog on how M&S might look at which stores they will close, with a list of stores that could be in danger.

BBC Manchester spoke to Matthew during the breakfast show on Thursday to find out more about why some towns in Greater Manchester had featured on his list. During the interview, Matthew discussed:

  • The need for M&S to look at locations in which they have more than one store for the same catchment of people.
  • The health of Bolton town centre as one of the towns featuring on the list, which has struggled in recent years and has seen major retailers close down and move away.
  • The trend for retailers to move from town centres to retail parks, which are easier for shoppers to access and usually offer free parking.
