Matthew Hopkinson talks about the impact of the closure of department stores on BBC Radio 4's You and Yours

21 April 2017 by Sarah Phillips

With news breaking this week that M&S will be closing six department stores and that Debenhams is reviewing their store strategy, Matthew Hopkinson was welcomed onto BBC Radio 4's You and Yours program today to provide a 60 second overview on the effect of the closure of department stores on Britain's high streets.

Matthew talks about the psychological impact of the closure of traditional departments shops on locals and fellow retailers who are concerned about attracting people to the high street. Matthew stresses that the numbers of these department stores is small compared to the wider number of stores and that the vacancy rates are slowly but surely reducing. He urges retailers to focus on providing a destination that gives consumers an experience that consumers want, rather than just shopping.
