A week on the high street

  • The City Pub Group has announced strong pub sales from Sunday, 82% up on the same day a year ago, due to the sunnier weather and extended opening hours. Sales across the group’s 43 pubs were “anaemic” on Saturday, thanks in part to the weather, according to executive chairman Clive Watson. Across retail and hospitality, the weekend saw mixed performance, with lower retail footfall on Saturday as the Coronation drew focus.

  • Secondhand store concept Charity Super.Mkt is to open a location in Manchester later this year as part of plans to revitalise the high street. Speaking to Retail Week, the store’s co-founder Wayne Hemingway said the store would ‘pop up’ for two days as part of the We Invented the Weekend festival in June, returning for a longer period in September. In January, Charity Super.Mkt’s six-week pop-up at London’s Brent Cross helped to raise £374,454 for the 10 charities that took part. Another site is currently open at Reading’s Oracle shopping centre until the 21st May.

  • Menswear retailer Moss Bros has announced plans to expand its store portfolio, after profits more than doubled. With a continued increase in demand for formalwear, Moss Bross sales jumped 63% in the 12 months to January 2023. There are 10 openings planned for this year, along with some “significant resites” of existing stores to bring them in line with the latest rebrand.
