  • Lidl has recently announced its intentions to reach “over 1,100 stores in the future”, as it published a list of priority locations for new UK stores. 2022 saw 50 new store openings for the discount grocer, with more than 1.4 million customers switching to Lidl from other supermarkets. Richard Taylor, Lidl GB chief development officer, said: “Our vision is to have over 1,100 stores in the future, but really there’s no ceiling on our ambition or growth potential. What’s important is that we take a strategic and sustainable approach to getting there.”

  • Following strong sales in Q1 2023, Bensons for Beds plan to open 40 new stores in the next two years. The retailer operates 160 UK sites, which it aims to expand to 200 through “re-enter[ing] markets and open[ing] in new catchments”. In Q1, Bensons for Beds opened new sites in Erdington and Peterborough, and will return to New Mersey Retail Park in Speke this month. Chief executive Nick Collard said: “Despite the UK’s economic challenges, it’s clear our investment in our stores, online and in product innovation is being warmly received by our customers…That momentum means we’re on track to return to deliver our plans for the year.”

  • Superdrug has announced plans for 25 new stores over 2023 as part of its omnichannel expansion strategy. The health and beauty brand recently opened new sites at Washington Galleries, Falkirk Central Retail Park and Braehead Shopping Centre. Upcoming openings are set for Dublin Dundrum, Manchester Trafford Centre and Brent Cross. 70 existing sites are also to be revamped to increase sustainability.

  • Prezzo is to close 46 of its sites as part of a review of business performance. 97 of the casual dining chain’s restaurants will remain after the closures, which have been driven by wider market challenges including rising inflation and ingredient costs. The group has said that its remaining portfolio will be better placed “to cater to changing consumer habits”.

  • Fashion retailer Peacocks is considering taking up 20 former M&Co sites, following the latter’s collapse. Peacocks is already set to move into a former M&Co store in Stornoway, Scotland, and it is understood to be in advanced negotiations to open on a site in Saffron Walden
