A Review of GB Shop Vacancy in 1st Half of 2011 (8th Sept)

In the current context of volatile share prices, sovereign debt problems, riots and general mayhem, one might be forgiven for failing to find much good news, especially on the High Street. Yet, although the picture on shop vacancy is generally gloomy, there are some bright spots around the UK. Official figures show households suffered a 0.8% drop in real disposable incomes during the first three months of the year as the rising costs of fuel, basic goods and VAT outstripped pay rises. As a result of this inflationary squeeze, consumer spending dropped by 0.6% for the second quarter in a row. A Royal wedding perked up the market temporarily but according to the British Retail Consortium consumer spending was sluggish even before the latest bout of turbulence...

Q2 2011 Shop Vacancy Report
July has seen yet another peak in the interest that retail, shops and towns has had in the media. From the Government’s review into the High Street, to the demise of TJ Hughes to Bosideng, one of China’s largest retailers, due to open a flagship store in London. Of greatest concern to many is the significant reductions announced by multiple retailers in store numbers but in contrast we have noted an improvement in the opening of Independent shops from its low in 2008/9.
