PRESS RELEASE - 40% of ex-Woolworths stores still remain empty!

New research from The Local Data Company shows that 40% of ex-Woolworths stores still remain empty. Since the last report in July 2009, this has shown a reduction from 60% vacant a year ago. This equates to over 300 ex-Woolworths stores still remaining unoccupied – a sizeable network for many national retailers. 2.1% of the total (807) are on their second tenant.

Westfield to cut tenant charges as shops stay empty

Westfield, the London shopping centre that opened amid fanfare six months ago, has backed down in a dispute with tenants over service charges amid signs that it is suffering in the economic downturn.

Europe’s biggest urban shopping mall was drawn into a dispute with 23 retailers over the charges it levied for shared facilities at the 43-acre centre in West London.

Michael Gutman, the managing director of the £1.6 billion centre, conceded that the charge would be adjusted.

Software technology: retail is still largely bricks not clicks

Online shopping’s share of total retail sales soared almost 20% last year, figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show. Following the recent expansion of broadband, this may be no surprise, but it will create confusion among retailers and landlords trying to plan for the future.

The ONS estimates that 3.5% of sales last December were made online, yet two years ago shopping centre organisation BCSC claimed this level had already been reached. At around this time, distribution giant ProLogis muddied the waters further by stating in its own study that web sales had reached 11% in 2006, following a 370% increase in four years.
